This has to be one of the best kept secrets of the tax reforms passed last year and (again) this year. I suspect that it will not survive into next year, mainly because people keep taking advantage of the “loophole” that has all the Democrats mad as hornets. The two California Senators tried to limit the exemption to “ag” vehicles this year, so –if you’re considering a qualifying purchase — move quick.
Basically, it works like this: Congress wanted to boost business investment for small business owners and the self-employed and (at the same time) prod the economy into a period of recovery. So, Congress increased the limit on capital purchases to include vehicles in excess of 6,000 lbs and changed the single year deduction from $25,000 to $75,000. This year, that deduction is even sweeter: $100,000.
So, let me break that down for you: If you’re self-employed or a small-business, you could go out and purchase any vehicle over 6,000 lbs and immediately credit $100,000 of the purchase cost against your taxes. So, if you need a delivery truck, heavy farm truck, Hummer H2, Lincoln Navigator, Mercedes M Class, or something like that – it’s pretty much free this year. Consult your local car dealer and tax professional, of course.
How great would that client feel when his real estate agent picks him up in a new Cadillac Escalade? Probably not near as great as the agent that bought it for free.
At last count, there are 38 or so SUVs and heavy trucks that qualify. As best I can, here’s the list and more links:

I am not sure how this works. I am starting a new business this year. I have no income as of Nov. 1, 2003, but I bought a Dodge Ram 3500 for the purpose of towing vehicles I repair for resale. I presently have 9 such vehicles in my stable and have made $0. So how can I get the credit of $39K for my new truck???? Yes, I am currently employeed and plan to retire in 2 years. I am setting up the business to cover my retirement. Any advice would be appreciated. Even if it means to go talk with an accountant and proceed from there.

I gotta say, I am very impressed with the new Dodge Dakota and the Dodge Durango. On the page I linked above, it lists the truck price which is fair, and some links to good reviews of the mean trucks. These trucks are really tough, and their SUVs are great too. I think Dodge leads the SUV and truck market.
I am also just started a business but am still employed. So if I bought a $30000 “qualifying” vehicle but I only have made $5000 from my business but I have made $50000 from my “job” can I srite the entire $30000 off against my job income?
thank you so much!
My understanding is no, you cannot. You can only take the deduction as a business expense against your self employed business. I believe that the car has to be purchased by the business, also.
Check with your tax guy.
does this apply only to a new vehicle, or would a used qualifying vehicle also be afforded the same tax breaks?
I own a construction company that makes on avarge 2 million dollars in work. how can i purchase a 6000lbs. suv for meeting my clients? can it still be done this year.
This does apply to new or used vehicles, as long as they meet the weight requirement.
Ask you tax professional (and maybe a local dealer) for the full documentation, but do it quick! The fiscal year is wrapping up and it has be on this year’s taxes!
