Waylon Jennings (1937-2002)
The first memory of Waylon Jennings‘s music I have is listening to an 8-track in my grandfather’s den as a very young boy. It was Waylon & Willie singing songs about cowboys, women, and good times. I was hooked. And, while I never owned a single Waylon album, I probably know all the words to at least two dozen Waylon songs.
I mean, as a boy I knew that my momma shouldn’t let me grow up to be a cowboy. I knew that I should be a doctor, or lawyer, or such. Who didn’t? But, like Waylon told us, it was just too much fun pickin’ guitars and driving ol’ trucks. And, hell, Waylon Jennings taught me that there was a town named “Luckenbach”.
So, tonight, I’ll download “Good Hearted Woman” and “Dukes of Hazard” and bore my wife to tears with stories of that old 8-track player.
